The criminal justice system in the United States is not perfect and mistakes can and do happen. Fortunately, individuals who are wrongfully convicted and sentenced have a right to have the trial court's final ruling re-evaluated in the California Superior Court, Court of Appeal, California Supreme Court, United States District Court and United States Supreme Court when errors were made in the trial court including errors in giving proper jury instructions, prosecutorial misconduct, judicial misconduct, violations of California and United States constitutional rights, ineffective assistance of counsel, insufficient evidence to convict, etc. A single legal oversight or violation of the law can affect the entire trial and cause an individual to be wrongfully convicted and/or sentenced.
